This course is made of two logically consequent modules; Quantum Electronics, taught by Prof. Pirzio in the first 6 weeks of the semester, and Nonlinear Optics, taught by Prof. Tartara in the remaining part of the semester (6-8 weeks). The aim of the course is to give the physical and technological background to understand the functioning of lasers and optical amplifiers (Quantum Electronics) and to describe the nonlinear interaction of laser light with matter aimed to the understanding of the working principles of integrated optical devices performing wavelength conversion, modulation, and logical functions (Nonlinear Optics).
