How can we explain the success of Silicon Valley? In other words why do economic activities concentrate in space? How do industries emerge in different territorial contexts? How do different regions transition towards a sustainable economy? Can technological change facilitate such a transition? And how do different stakeholders (e.g. government, companies) enhance/hinder this process both locally and globally?

This course is an introduction to the main topics of regional economics and how regional economies cope with environmental sustainability. The course provides both theoretical and empirical knowledge on these topics. A particular attention is given to technological change, one of the main driver of regional economic growth and sustainable transition. Theoretical knowledge will be complemented with data labs, policy labs and in-depth discussion of scientific articles.
