The course aims to introduce students to the ideas, works, and perspectives of some of the most important Western political thinkers. from Machiavelli to Mazzini and Marx, about issues such as human rights, conflict, revolution, colonialism, and imperialism. On completion of this course, students should have familiarized themselves with some of the most important strands of thought about modern international political order and relations.
Skills that will be practised and developed in this course include an ability to communicate ideas and arguments effectively, whether in class discussion or in written form; formulate and justify arguments and conclusions about a range of issues, and present appropriate supporting evidence; think critically and challenge assumptions; to use a range of information technology resources to assist with information retrieval and assignment presentation. Students will also acquire time management skills and an ability to independently organise their own study methods and workload and an ability work effectively with others as part of a team or group in seminar discussions.
