The world economy has grown at an unprecedented pace in the last half- a-century pushed and sustained by the diffusion and strengthening of socio-economic forces such as entrepreneurship and innovation, human capital formation and mobility, science and technology. The course aims at offering a sociological view on these “engines of development” looking at relevant institutions, cultural elements and social relations associated with them, providing students with references to different theoretical approaches and empirical evidence.

How can we transition towards a sustainable economy? Can technological change facilitate such a transition? And how do different stakeholders (e.g. government, Ngo) enhance/hinder this process both locally and globally?
The aim of this course is to provide theoretical and empirical knowledge of how economic systems cope with the challenges of environmental sustainability and the transition towards a green economy. A particular attention will be given to experiences in the European Union and the Global South. The programme builds on knowledge from a variety of approaches in the fields of economic growth, environmental economics, technological change, sustainable transition, economic geography and science and public policy. Theoretical knowledge will be complemented with data analysis sessions and debates on compelling societal questions. Besides the instructor, during the course students will have the chance to interact with experts in the fields.
